I attended a liberal arts college on a writing scholarship, and worked at the college writing center and as a tutor - both jobs I loved. I funded my graduate education with more scholarships, fellowships and grants - and by teaching, editing and tutoring.
I hold a BA in world history, and PhD in American history.
I have two decades of experience helping people with their writing projects.
I am a member of SCBWI, the Authors Guild, and other professional organizations.
When I am not at my desk, you might find me out enjoying nature or working on my photography (found throughout this website, at galleries and in my Getty portfolio).
My pieces have been published in newspapers, journals and anthologies. My research and writing has been supported by the Vermont Historical Society, the Nantucket Historical Association, Splendid Mola, Monson Arts, the Highlights foundation, California Arts and Cultures, and the SCBWI.
The idea for the Academic Life podcast came out of conversations I had with my dad in late 2018 and early 2019.
I won grants, which helped me afford to study the craft of interviewing and of podcasting. I bought a microphone, found a mentor, took workshops and built relationships with presses. In early 2020, I began producing and hosting episodes for the Gender Channel on the NBN. Then I launched my own podcast - the Academic Life - in late 2020. I have produced this weekly show ever since.
Academic Life is found wherever you get podcasts. It is heard in more than 160 countries, and has been downloaded half a million times - and counting. Join the listening audience by clicking the link below.
